むかしむかし、日本の高天原に、アマテラスオオミカミという太陽の神様がいました。彼女は世界を明るく照らし、作物を育て、人々を導くとても大切な存在でした。しかし、このアマテラスオオミカミには、弟のスサノオノミコトという、とんでもなくやんちゃな神様がいました。
スサノオノミコトは荒ぶる神として知られ、性格は豪快で自由奔放。何よりも暴れまわるのが大好きでした。彼は高天原にやってくるなり、やりたい放題の大暴れを始めました。
「ねえねえアマテラス、ちょっと遊ぼうよ！」
スサノオノミコトは姉にちょっかいをかけようとしましたが、アマテラスオオミカミは太陽神としての仕事が忙しく、そんな暇はありませんでした。
「私は忙しいのです。あなたも少しは落ち着いてください」
ところがスサノオノミコトは、「なんだよつまんない！」と拗ねてしまい、ついに高天原でとんでもない悪さをし始めます。
まずは田んぼをめちゃくちゃにしました。「オイラ、稲刈りなんか知らないよー！」と叫びながら、田を荒らし、植えられた苗を踏みつぶします。農業に勤しむ神々は大慌て。
次に、神々の家に土足で乗り込み、家具をひっくり返し、「わっはっは！ 大掃除だ！」と大笑い。家主の神様たちは呆然と立ち尽くします。
そして極めつけが、アマテラスオオミカミの神殿に、汚れた馬の皮を投げ込むという前代未聞の暴挙でした。これにはさすがのアマテラスオオミカミもショックを受けました。
「もういやです！」
アマテラスオオミカミは怒りと悲しみのあまり、ついに天岩戸と呼ばれる巨大な岩の洞窟へと閉じこもってしまいました。太陽神が隠れたことで、世界はたちまち暗闇に包まれます。
「おお、どうしたことか……」
光のない世界では作物も育たず、神々は大混乱。夜ばかりが続き、寒さに震える神々はなんとかアマテラスオオミカミを外に出そうとしました。
そこで、神々の中でも知恵者と名高いオモイカネノカミが考えます。
「これはただお願いするだけでは駄目じゃ。どうにかして興味を引かねば」
オモイカネノカミは、アメノコヤネノカミやフトダマノカミといった神々と協力し、一計を案じました。そして、アメノウズメノミコトにお願いをします。
「君の力を借りたいのじゃ。アマテラスオオミカミを外に出すために、最高に面白いことをやってくれぬか？」
アメノウズメノミコトは自信満々に答えます。
「任せてください！ 私の踊りを見れば、岩戸の向こうでも気になって仕方なくなるはずです！」
こうして、神々は岩戸の前で盛大な宴を開くことにしました。楽器を打ち鳴らし、酒を酌み交わし、大騒ぎ。その中で、アメノウズメノミコトが舞台に立ちました。
彼女はなんと、着ていた衣を少しずつ脱ぎ捨てながら、陽気に踊り始めたのです。
「なんという大胆な踊りだ！」
神々は大笑いし、大盛り上がり。アメノウズメノミコトはさらに激しく踊り、足を踏み鳴らし、腰をくねらせ、時には変顔までして笑いを誘います。神々の笑い声はどんどん大きくなり、ついには天岩戸の奥にまで響きました。
岩戸の中で、アマテラスオオミカミは不思議に思いました。
「えっ、何がそんなに面白いのですか？ 私が隠れているのに、どうしてみんな楽しそうなのです？」
気になって、岩戸の隙間からそっと外を覗いてみます。
すると、すかさずタヂカラオノカミがその隙間に手をかけ、一気に岩戸を引き開けました！
「さあ、もう閉じこもるのは終わりじゃ！」
アマテラスオオミカミは突然の明るさに驚きましたが、周りの神々が大喜びしているのを見て、ついに笑みを浮かべました。
「なんだか……ちょっとだけ楽しくなってきました」
こうして、アマテラスオオミカミは再び天に戻り、世界は再び光を取り戻しました。
後日談
スサノオノミコトはというと、さすがに今回ばかりは大目玉を食らいました。神々の会議で「お前、さすがにやりすぎ！」とこっぴどく叱られ、高天原を追放されることに。
「えー！ そんなに怒らなくてもいいじゃん！」
そう言いながらも、スサノオノミコトは旅に出ることになりました。彼がのちに出雲でヤマタノオロチを退治するのは、また別のお話です。
天岩戸事件はこうして幕を閉じましたが、今もなお「引きこもったら誰かに引っ張り出してもらおう」という教訓を残しているのかもしれません。

The Amano-Iwato Incident – The Great Hide-and-Seek of Amaterasu Omikami
A long, long time ago, in the heavenly realm of Takamagahara, there was a goddess named Amaterasu Omikami. She was the goddess of the sun, illuminating the world, nurturing crops, and guiding the people. Without her, the world would be shrouded in darkness.
However, Amaterasu Omikami had a younger brother, Susanoo no Mikoto, who was an absolute troublemaker. Known as the god of storms and chaos, he was wild, free-spirited, and loved to cause mischief. The moment he arrived in Takamagahara, he began wreaking havoc.
“Hey, Amaterasu! Let’s play!”
Susanoo no Mikoto cheerfully called out to his sister, but Amaterasu Omikami was far too busy with her divine duties.
“I’m busy. You should calm down a little,” she replied.
But Susanoo no Mikoto pouted and grumbled, “That’s so boring!” And with that, he started causing all kinds of trouble across the heavens.
First, he trampled through the rice fields, destroying the carefully cultivated crops. “I don’t know anything about farming!” he laughed as he ran amok, leaving farmers in distress.
Then, he barged into the houses of the gods with muddy feet, knocking over furniture and throwing everything into disarray. “This is just a bit of cleaning up!” he declared, while the other gods stared at him in shock.
But the worst of all was when he flung the filthy hide of a skinned horse into Amaterasu Omikami’s sacred weaving hall. This act was beyond reckless—it was outright blasphemy.
Amaterasu Omikami was devastated.
“I can’t take this anymore!”
Overcome with sorrow and anger, she sealed herself inside Amano-Iwato, a massive rock cave. With the sun goddess in hiding, the world was plunged into darkness.
“Oh no, what do we do…?”
Without sunlight, crops stopped growing, and the gods fell into despair. Endless night loomed over the world, and the freezing cold spread. The gods desperately sought a way to bring Amaterasu Omikami back.
The Plan to Lure Amaterasu Omikami Out
Among the gods, the wisest of them all, Omoikane no Kami, came up with a plan.
“Simply asking her to come out won’t work. We need to make her curious!”
Omoikane no Kami gathered Ame no Koyane no Kami, Futodama no Kami, and other deities to help set the stage. Then, he approached Ame no Uzume no Mikoto, the goddess of dance and revelry.
“We need your talents. Can you put on the most entertaining performance ever and lure Amaterasu Omikami out?”
With a confident grin, Ame no Uzume no Mikoto replied, “Leave it to me! Once she sees my dance, she won’t be able to resist!”
Thus, the gods threw a grand festival in front of Amano-Iwato. They played instruments, poured sacred sake, and raised a ruckus. In the midst of all this, Ame no Uzume no Mikoto took center stage.
What she did next was astonishing—she began dancing while gradually removing her clothes.
“What a bold performance!”
The gods erupted into laughter, clapping and cheering as she danced more wildly. She stomped her feet, swayed her hips, and even made goofy faces to keep the audience entertained. The gods’ laughter grew louder and louder, echoing deep into Amano-Iwato.
Inside the cave, Amaterasu Omikami was puzzled.
“Wait… What’s so funny? The world is in darkness, and yet they seem to be having a great time?”
Her curiosity got the better of her, and she peeked through a crack in the rock to see what was happening outside.
At that very moment, Tajikarao no Kami sprang into action. He grabbed the rock and, with all his might, pulled it open in one powerful motion.
“Enough hiding! It’s time to come back!”
Startled by the sudden brightness, Amaterasu Omikami blinked, but as she saw the joyful faces of the gods, a small smile crept onto her face.
“Well… this does seem a little fun,” she admitted.
And so, Amaterasu Omikami emerged once more, restoring light to the world.
Epilogue
As for Susanoo no Mikoto, he was in deep trouble. The gods held a divine trial and scolded him harshly.
“You’ve gone way too far this time!”
As punishment, he was exiled from Takamagahara.
“What?! You guys are so strict!” he protested, but there was no escaping his fate. And so, Susanoo no Mikoto set off on a journey, which would later lead him to battle the fearsome Yamata no Orochi—but that’s a story for another time.
The Amano-Iwato incident ended with the world returning to light, but perhaps even now, it serves as a reminder:
If someone locks themselves away, sometimes, all they need is a bit of curiosity and a little push to step back into the light.
